In the winter of 2016, we packed our rucksacks and headed off to Paraguay.<br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/> We made our way by pick-up truck to Guarambare, the home of our organically-farmed Fairtrade sugar cane.<br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5690\" src=\"https:\/\/lemon-aid.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/26.10_Lemonaid-in-Paraguay-3-of-10.jpg\" alt=\"26-10_lemonaid-in-paraguay-3-of-10\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1335\" \/><br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/> The members of the ASOCAZE cooperative have been farming organically there for more than 15 years. They sell their high-quality raw materials according to strict Fairtrade principles, meaning their family can earn a decent income. This isn\u2019t to be taken for granted in this region, where social inequality and corruption are major problems.<br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5695\" src=\"https:\/\/lemon-aid.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/26.10_Lemonaid-in-Paraguay-4-of-10.jpg\" alt=\"26-10_lemonaid-in-paraguay-4-of-10\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1335\" \/><br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/> The farmers once more blew us away with the excellent quality of their sugar cane \u2013 and showed us that it\u2019s pretty delicious even just as it comes. It\u2019s a natural snack straight from the fields!<br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5697\" src=\"https:\/\/lemon-aid.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/26.10_Lemonaid-in-Paraguay-5-of-10.jpg\" alt=\"The freshly cut sugarcane tastes is a tasty snack - quite sweet, of course.\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1335\" \/><br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/> This naturally sweet product is harvested from May to November, according to the traditional method \u2013 by hand, with a machete.<br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5700\" src=\"https:\/\/lemon-aid.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/26.10_Lemonaid-in-Paraguay-7-of-10.jpg\" alt=\"Almost all sugarcane at ASOCAZE is still being cut by hand with machetes.\" width=\"1335\" height=\"2000\" \/><br \/>\n<br class=\"\u201cclear\u201c\" \/> The freshly-cut sugar cane is then bundled up and loaded onto the smallholders\u2019 truck with a crane.
